A little preparation makes your first Candela GentleMax Pro Plus® session safer, more comfortable, and more effective. Here's exactly what to do, and what to avoid, in the days leading up to your appointment.
Prepare for a smooth session.
- Shave the treatment area 12–24 hours before
A clean, close shave lets the laser energy reach the follicle directly. No stubble required, but skin shouldn't be raw.
- Arrive with clean skin
No lotions, oils, sunscreen, deodorant, perfume or makeup on the area being treated. Plain, freshly-washed skin only.
- Hydrate well in the days before
Well-hydrated skin tolerates the cryogen cooling and laser energy more comfortably.
- Wear loose, breathable clothing
Especially for bikini, underarm or leg sessions: friction on freshly-treated skin can cause unnecessary irritation.
- Bring a list of current medications
Some prescriptions and supplements increase photosensitivity. Your provider will review them at intake.
- Plan a low-sun day after
Schedule indoor or low-exposure activities for the 24–48 hours following your session.
Skip these to protect your results.
- No waxing, plucking or threading for 4 weeks
These remove the follicle the laser needs to target. Shaving is the only acceptable hair removal between sessions.
- No bleaching the hair for 4 weeks
The laser locks onto the natural pigment in the hair. Bleached hair won't absorb the energy effectively.
- No sun exposure or self-tanner for 2–4 weeks
Tanned or self-tanned skin alters how the laser reads pigment and increases the risk of irritation.
- No retinoids on the treatment area for 5–7 days
Retin-A, tretinoin and similar actives thin the surface and can heighten sensitivity. Pause briefly before each session.
- No exfoliating acids or scrubs 48 hours prior
Glycolic, salicylic and physical scrubs leave the skin temporarily reactive; give it a quiet 48 hours to settle.
- Avoid caffeine the morning of
It can heighten skin sensitivity for some patients. Water is the better pre-session choice.
