By Dr. Anna Frisch, MD, PhD. Most injectors never ask about your thyroid. I ask every patient, and here is why.
A neurotoxin meets an endocrine history
BOTOX® Cosmetic acts where nerves signal muscles. The label asks patients to disclose nerve and muscle conditions, and it names myasthenia gravis as a risk factor for serious side effects. Myasthenia gravis is autoimmune, and it occurs more often in people who already have autoimmune thyroid disease such as Hashimoto's or Graves'.
What I review before every treatment
- Thyroid diagnosis and control. Stable, treated thyroid disease is common and usually compatible with treatment.
- Autoimmune history. One autoimmune condition makes another more likely.
- Medications. Blood thinners, certain antibiotics and muscle relaxants are reviewed.
- Hormonal changes. Perimenopause, menopause and weight change affect skin quality and how a plan is built.
Why I perform every injection
At Palm Beach Cosmetic Medicine the physician who reviews your history is the physician who injects. I treat the FDA-approved areas only: forehead lines, frown lines, crow's feet and platysma bands, with product purchased directly from Allergan Aesthetics.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Do I need to see an endocrinologist before BOTOX® Cosmetic?
- Not necessarily, but your thyroid, autoimmune and medication history should be reviewed. At PBCM Dr. Frisch does that review herself.
- Does BOTOX® Cosmetic change hormone levels?
- No. It acts where nerves meet muscles and is not a hormone treatment.
