Federal health agencies have warned about counterfeit and mishandled botulinum toxin injections. Here is what to ask before you are treated anywhere.
Why this question matters
In 2024, federal health agencies warned the public about counterfeit and mishandled botulinum toxin injections after people became ill following treatment given by unlicensed or untrained individuals, or in non-clinical settings. BOTOX® Cosmetic is a prescription medicine, and where it comes from and who injects it both matter.
Four questions to ask before treatment
- Where was this product purchased? Genuine BOTOX® Cosmetic comes from Allergan Aesthetics or its authorized distribution. Ask directly.
- Can I see the vial? A reputable practice will show you the vial before treatment, with the Allergan label and lot number.
- Who is injecting, and what is their license? In Florida, injectables are a medical treatment. Ask for the name and credentials of the person treating you.
- Is the price far below everyone else's? A price that seems too good can mean diluted, mishandled or counterfeit product.
A practice that is an Allē member
Allē is Allergan Aesthetics' rewards program. Practices that participate are verified with Allergan, and members earn points on genuine treatments.
