Skin-type coverage: Fitzpatrick I–VI

Wellington patients reflect a full Fitzpatrick range, from very fair skin to richly melanized skin, often with significant sun exposure year-round. A practice that treats only with Diode has to push the same wavelength against all of those scenarios.

On Fitzpatrick I–III, Alexandrite generally outperforms Diode on speed of clearance and total reduction. On Fitzpatrick V–VI, Nd:YAG is widely considered the safer wavelength because deeper penetration plus lower epidermal melanin absorption reduces the risk of burns and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. On Fitzpatrick IV and tanned skin, Nd:YAG with appropriate cooling is often a more conservative, more predictable choice than 810 nm Diode at the energies needed to actually destroy the follicle.

For PCOS-driven facial hair, perimenopausal chin and jawline hair, beard reshaping, and pseudofolliculitis barbae, the Nd:YAG arm of the Candela is the wavelength I reach for most often. Single-wavelength Diode platforms simply do not give the operator the same option.

Cooling: Dynamic Cooling Device vs contact cooling

Most Diode platforms cool the skin with a chilled sapphire tip pressed against the treatment area, or with cold air blown over it. These are real protections, and on lower fluences they work. But contact cooling holds a steady temperature; it does not respond to the moment of the laser pulse itself.

Cooling is not about comfort marketing. It is the mechanism that allows aggressive yet safe energy delivery. On a Diode with only contact cooling, the operator often has to reduce energy to protect the epidermis, which can mean more sessions for the same result.
